Captain Vote
Gamification for Civic Engagement
What do a Jump’n’Run game and democracy have in common? Correct – participation matters!
For the 2024 US presidential election, EDBYTO developed Captain Vote, a browser-based gamification project that demonstrates how playful mechanics can spread social messages virally.
In this Jump’n’Run adventure, the player guides ‘Captain Vote’ through a unique course that combines classic game elements with animated infographics. The mission? To safely deliver one’s own vote to its destination! The goal is to skillfully avoid the treacherous ‘Swing States’ and defend against news attacks from all directions.
Gamification makes complex political processes accessible: After a successful vote, the application visualizes the election results as a dynamic real-time graphic. The interactive high score displays the current election results – data visualization becomes a game element, and political participation becomes a sense of achievement.
Accessibility was a key focus during development. The gamification project runs on all devices – desktop, tablet, smartphone – directly in the browser, without installation. Easy shareability via social media channels enhances viral distribution. Everyone can bring their virtual vote to its destination.
The central message: Every vote counts! Gamification for civic engagement makes democratic self-efficacy tangible – playfully, humorously, and without technical hurdles.
